M-I-C-E rules to avoid being unwanted leader!
It is wonderful to have a great leader in any group, organization or even in a community. Everyone of us have been witness all the GREAT features on how a good leader will be, in a way of communicate, behave, act and even think BUT we tend to forget or ignore the attributes how a leader should not be.
So, here we are to see the characteristics that a leader should NOT possess in leading people.
- Micromanagement
It is the inclination to micromanage where unfortunately some people thinks that is a good quality while it is not. Micromanagers interrogate team members and become involved in various facets of the group, usually out of worry that others aren’t doing their jobs well. When there is micromanage happens, team members become resentful, believing that even their best isn’t good enough. It also forces the team members to modify their work habits to fit with the leader style, stifling originality and independent thought.
When a company/ group is run by a micromanager, time and money are wasted, and possibilities are never created because employees/ members are afraid of crossing the manager’s carefully defined limits. Micromanaging not only frustrates members, but it also costs inclusive on the micromanager that could be spent on their own tasks.
2. Integrity
Integrity is everything. A leader should not be possess with lack of integrity. It doesn’t matter how capable, intelligent or effective a leader is. If lack of moral integrity, troubles are bound to follow. Generally, employees look at their own leaders as an examples of what behaviour is acceptable. If a leader is engaging in unethical behaviour, it won’t be long before the employees under the team are engaging in unethical behaviour as well.
Sooner or later, a lack of moral integrity always leads to a person’s undoing, which is why it should be a major red flag. Also as a leader, one should have the adaptability in good possession and not vice versa. For sure, there is no “one-size-fits-all” approach that will work out in every situation. Thus, integrity should be the main concern when you wants to be a leader to handle upcoming challenges.
3. Communication
Being excellence in communication is considered as an critical characteristics for a leader. However, the one characteristic are inappropriate for a leader to possess is poor communicator. Poor communication skills are one of the top poor leadership qualities to watch out for.
Incapable of communicating cause many defects throughout the work process besides shows the poor leadership. Poor communication may leads to miscommunication, misunderstandings, delays, mistakes and dissatisfied team members. furthermore, the problems are limitless, it can effects to damage an organization and its people. Moreover, not only about the communication but also listening. Listen to team members is a part of a good leadership in regards to their needs and wants.
4. Emotional Intelligence
Last but not least, the quality that a leader should not possess in leading people are low emotional intelligence. The entire scope of intelligence around the world won’t make you a successful leader if you are unable to control and manage your own emotions. The way you perceive, express, comprehend situations or events is referred as emotional intelligence.
Without an accommodate emotional intelligence, a leader will never be able to establish a good relationships with team members due to the lack of social networking abilities and an understanding disposition. In addition, it’s practically impossible for a team to move forward with positive energy or optimism when the leader actually spread negativity, angers and hatred that creep into workplace atmosphere.
Moral of the story, the notion is very straightforward. There is no single leader that has all of the answers and able to change everything at once. Moreover, the “MICE rules” is not specific for elder or younger generation to differentiate them, it applied to all. Further, a change is a must to have fresh ideas and thus welcoming future generation is compulsory to perceive things from new perspective as well as a way of improvement.
